Heaven and Earth Last Forever

← Verse VI All Verses Verse VIII →

Heaven and earth last forever.

Why do heaven and earth last forever?

They are unborn, so ever living.

The sage stays behind, thus he is ahead.

He is detached, thus at one with all.

Through selfless action, he attains fulfillment.

Western Commentary

The paradox at the heart of this verse is one of the Tao Te Ching's most practical teachings: by stepping back, you move forward. By letting others take credit, you endure. The western drive for self-promotion — the personal brand, the highlighted resume, the constant self-assertion — may actually undermine the very lasting impact it seeks. The sage achieves through selflessness what the self-promoter cannot achieve through striving.

Sit With This

Where might stepping back or removing yourself from the center of a situation actually lead to a better outcome for everyone, including you?
