Verse III of LXXXI

Without Contention

Bù shàng xián

← Verse II All Verses Verse IV →

Not exalting the gifted prevents quarreling.

Not collecting treasures prevents stealing.

Not seeing desirable things prevents confusion of the heart.

The wise leader empties people's minds and fills their cores,

weakens their ambition and toughens their resolve.

He helps people lose everything they know, everything they desire,

and creates confusion in those who think that they know.

Practice not-doing, and everything will fall into place.

Western Commentary

This verse challenges the western obsession with status, achievement, and acquisition. When a culture constantly elevates celebrities, wealth, and visible success, it creates a population of people who feel perpetually lacking. The sage leader — whether running a company, a family, or a nation — creates conditions where people are nourished rather than stimulated, settled rather than inflamed.

Sit With This

What desires or ambitions are currently creating noise in your mind that, if quieted, might reveal what you actually need?
